At the same time California is facing a $24 billion budget gap, a “skills gap” is looming. By 2025, according to a study from the Public Policy Institute of California, 41 percent of the jobs in California will require at least a bachelor’s degree, but only 35 percent of Californians will have one. California will face a shortage of 1 million college graduates, according to the “Educating California: Choices for the Future” study. Cuts in education spending are against the state’s long-term interests, the report concluded.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel published an article detailing UC President Mark Yudof’s proposal to cut faculty and staff salaries by up to 8 percent through furloughs and/or salary reductions.

The San Francisco Chronicle published a page one article today about a letter from the UC Faculty Association that criticized the UC Regents’ response to the state budget crisis.
But Academic Senate Chair Mary Croughan said the Regents have worked diligently on the budget crisis for months. “The budget is discussed in every regents meeting, and I don’t believe we need to have an emergency meeting on this,” Croughan said. Croughan added that UC President Mark Yudof has sent out many letters to faculty, staff and students about how the university is addressing the crisis. This week, Yudof sent a letter six pages long on options for furloughs and pay cuts.

The two-house budget conference committee has adopted a number of actions on the governor’s state budget proposals for 2008-09 and 2009-10. The Democratic-controlled conference committee made these changes to the governor’s proposals affecting the University of California:

With UC facing severe cuts in state funding, President Mark Yudof has proposed three options for systemwide furloughs and/or salary reductions. Faculty and staff would see compensation cut by about 8 percent, saving more than $190 million under the options, which Regents are expected to consider at their July meeting.
