California Master Plan for Higher Education dead?

Op-EdCalifornia Progress Report columnist Pete Schrag blames the state’s governors and legislators for breaking the tuition-free promise of the master plan. The obvious fix, he writes, would be higher taxes to support higher education and K-12 schools.

Master Plan needs funding, not fixing

From the PresidentUC President Mark Yudof joined the chancellors of California State University and California Community Colleges to testify before a joint legislative committee reviewing the state’s Master Plan for Higher Education. The three education leaders were unanimous in their opinion: The plan does not need structural changes, just a stronger commitment from the state to fund it.

UC faculty share concerns over fee increases, protests

UC Academic Council members expressed concern over recent campus fee increase protests in a open letter to the UC community. The letter says the university must be a place where it is safe to teach, learn and protest peacefully.Occupying campus buildings directly interferes with the rights of others. The  20 Academic Council members who signed the letter said they share the anguish of students over the state budget cuts and resulting fee increases: “The budget shortfall wounds the institution and community we cherish.”

UC Irvine stages budget ‘write-in’

UC Irvine is holding a group letter-writing event today as part of a systemwide campaign to let the governor and state legislators know that cutting funds to UC is a bad idea. The campus is inviting the public to attend at Alumni House from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Can’t make it to Irvine?  Write your own letter and ask Governor Schwarzenegger to restore the $913 million in UC funding needed to bring back classes and programs eliminated because of the state’s disinvestment in higher education.
